Ghost Net Busters

Help us stop the killers that keep on killing with a gift that will keep on giving whales, sharks, dolphins, sea lions and more a chance to live.

Ghost Net Busters

Have you heard about the killer ghosts haunting our oceans, and the Sea of Cortez in particular? Ghost nets are practically indestructible plastic fishing nets that have been abandoned, lost, or discarded in the sea. Up to one million tons of new ghost nets begin to haunt the seas per year and a single one can be several kilometers in length! You know that plastic trash in the sea is a BIG problem, but do you know that 30%-50% of it comes from these ghost nets? We are teaming with CRRIFS.org and local fishing communities to search for, remove, and recycle them. This is tough work from start to finish as a single net can mean hours of risky diving in frigid water to remove it, haul it up, store it onboard (and let me tell you – they make a nostril-burning STINK due to all the decomposing bodies caught in them), and get it shipped to the recycler to make brand new flip flops.
